What is conservation framing?

Conservation framing means that Frame Plus Art uses only the highest quality materials and techniques designed to preserve and protect your artwork. In conservation framing no materials or techniques are used that can not be reversed, leaving the art undamaged and in it’s original state.

Why is conservation framing important?

Many factors can have an adverse effect on your artwork, speeding its deterioration. These factors include lighting, humidity, temperature and improper framing to name just a few. Conservation framing helps prevent these conditions from harming your artwork. The premium paid for conservation framing is marginal, and in the long run well worth the added cost.

What should be conservation framed?

Conservation framing should be done for original artwork, valuable collector prints, treasured family photographs or mementos, documents with historical value and needle-points. There are many other things not in this list which have either sentimental or monetary value to you that you would want to include. It is up to you to make the final decision whether or not an item is valuable enough to warrant conservation framing.

What does acid-free mean?

Paper, canvas or matboard treated to neutralize its natural acidity to protect fine art and photographic prints from discolouration and deterioration.

What is a limited edition?

Set of identical prints numbered in succession and often signed by the artist. The total number of prints in an edition is fixed and the artist inspects each print before signing.

What is a signature edition?

A print edition of unlimited number which has been inspected and signed by the artist.

What is an open edition?

A print edition of unlimited number with no artist signature.

What is a remarque?

Small original sketch in the margin of a print by the artist. Remarques may be executed in pencil or colour depending on the artist.

What are artist’s proofs?

Prints traditionally intended for the artist’s personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately 10% of an edition for artist’s proofs.

What is a canvas edition?

Art reproduction on canvas created by photomechanical lithography or giclée. These canvases accurately replicate the character and texture of the original painting.

What is giclée?

Giclée (pronounced zhee-clay) is a reproduction from digital files of an original artwork with ink sprayed directly to a substrate. The process makes millions of ink hues available and closely matches the original.
